The award in Graphic Design aims to give the student an introduction to the skills necessary to become a graphic designer. The work of a graphic designer mainly involves producing designs for printed items such as business stationary, leaflets, posters, advertising and so on. Much of this work is today computer based.
Some graphic designers are employed by printers, some work for larger design or advertising agencies and some work as freelance self-employed designers. A few might work in related areas of design such as web site design.
Students studying for this award will take the following design-related modules: Drawing (to develop visual awareness), Design (showing you how to develop ideas), Desktop Publishing (how documents are laid out), Photography (how to edit digital images), and Graphic Design (developing specific skills of the graphic designer). In addition students will take certain General Studies modules.
The portfolio of art and design work that you will have produced over the two years can be used to apply to a third level college such as Limerick Institute of Technology. Some of our previous students have taken this route.
